How to Buy a School Mascot Costume: A Decision-by-Decision Guide

Buying a school mascot costume works best as a sequence of decisions - identity first, then design, customization, sizing, and finally the order itself. This guide orders those decisions so nothing gets skipped.

Every mascot costume purchase at a school goes through the same funnel: a mascot identity, a shortlist of designs, a decision on customization, an agreement on sizing, and an order. The schools that get the best result treat those as five separate decisions rather than one shopping trip.

1. Confirm the mascot identity first

The costume is the physical form of a mascot the school has already chosen - an eagle, a bulldog, a tiger, or a custom character. If the identity is not settled, settle it before looking at costumes. Start with the school's established symbols and colors, and only consider a change when there is a clear reason to rebrand.

2. Shortlist designs, not just animals

Two costumes of the same animal can look and perform very differently - one may have a realistic head with a sculpted mouth, another a cartoon face with a fixed grin. Build a shortlist of two or three designs and compare them on the features your events actually need: sightlines, head weight, ease of putting on, and how the costume reads at distance.

3. Confirm customization before you commit

Most school orders include some customization - school colors on the body, a logo panel, or custom eye color. Customization availability varies by design, so confirm what a specific design supports before you fall in love with it. If you need a logo or lettering applied, ask the MascotCosplay team whether that design supports it.

4. Agree sizing with the actual wearers in mind

Sizing is driven by the wearer's height, with weight, chest, and waist as supporting measurements. If several people will share the costume, size for the largest expected wearer and provide that person's measurements. See the sizing guide below for the full measurement checklist.

5. Place the order with complete details

When you order, include the school or team name, the wearer's measurements, any colors or logo requirements, and - if you have a fixed-date event like homecoming - that date so the team can review the timeline. Complete details at order time prevent delays later.
